The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT):

• Educates families about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area
• Trains families in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, and team organization.

Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, and once CERT members have taken care of their families, CERT members may if they choose assiste others in their neighborhood/workplace in the event professional responders are not immediately available.

CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in thier community.
